Can variation in input explain variation in typical spoken target-language features during study abroad?

Many studies have confirmed the belief that a stay abroad (SA) is beneficial for second language (L2) development. However, substantial variation in learning outcomes has long been acknowledged. Research identified range of factors explain variability target-language few focused on linguistic characteristics overall L2 input available to SA participants. In this study, we examine role situation during SA, explaining typical spoken features. We will present six case from longitudinal LANGSNAP corpus French learners at university United Kingdom, who undertook two-semester France. For each participant, established an profile based data questionnaires and interviews collected before, following SA. The analysis learner production over time examined three spoken-language phenomena: negative particle ne, pronoun on as first-person-plural subject discourse markers. Since these phenomena are variable both formal informal French, compared learners’ found different reference corpora. Overall, results show convincing relationship between ongoing Analyses corpora differences proportions studied according level formality use. learners, limited engagement everyday interaction corresponds weaker use phenomena.
